Namwon Hyanggyo(County School) was founded in 1410. Initially, it was located in front of Mount Kyoryong. Since then, it has been moved twice to other locations; below Dokum Peak in 1428 and 512 Hyanggyo-dong at the foot of Mount Wangbong in 1443, which is its current location.

History has taken its toll on the buildings themselves; all the buildings were burned to ashes during the Japanese Invasion of 1597, Thereafter, the restoration began一一Taisongjon(Confucius Hall) in 1599 and yongryundang
(Auditorium) in 1609. In 1 935, the main gate to the County Hall was moved here, which was then renovated for the use as the main gate to the campus and was named Chingangru(Pavilion for Moral Enhancement).

Other buildings also were constructed such as Chunghyokwan(House for Royal and Filial Loyalty) and Kanghakdang(Auditorium fpr Learning).

Namwon Hyanggyo, one of The core schools in Cholla Province has functioned with double purpose; learning of Confucianism and service to the Sages and thereby the institution has served as the base for fostering Confucianism in the local community. The location of the served Sages in the service hall is as follows; five greatest Sages including Confucious are enshrined at the center and are winged by four Sages from Sung China and eighteen Sages from Korea. W아ship Services to the Sages are conducted in accordance with the lunar calendar and the ritual codes on a regularly basis. Services of the highest level are onducted twice a year (in both February and August) and those of the lower level are conducted twice a month(on both the first and the fifteenth).
