The korean term hyanggyo refers to a kind of educational institution that was established by the government at the local areas in the joseon period.
There, students learned the doctrines and history of Confucianism and held memorial services in the repose for their ancestors.
This hyanggyo school was originally built on the foot of Mt. Gwan-ak in 1398, but it was moved to the present location in 1690 after several fires and for the number of students was decreased.

The educational facilities of a hyanggyo generally include a lecture hall called Myeongnyundang and two dormitories called Dongjae and Seojae. Myeongnyundang is the only educational facility of Gwacheon Hyanggyo. The meaning of Myeongnyundang is "The Hall for Brightening the Ethics".
